Livorno rides high on the start of the year

The port of Livorno has reported above market growth in its container throughput figures of 16,9% in container for the first quarter of 2016. The Livorno-based box operator’s volumes climbed from just shy of 172.322 Teus to 201.364 Teus year-on-year during the three-month period.

 

CARGO volumes at the Tuscan port passed the 8m tonnes mark for the first three months in 2016, up nearly 7% over the same period last year.

 

The freight total was boosted by 10% year-on-year increase in Ro-ro volumes (91.200 units) and by the number of cars handled that was up by 26,6% to 139,000 vehicles.

 

Among the other segments forest products grew by 17% during the first quarter of the year to 501.000 tonnes. Cruise tourism too, saw growth with a 16% rise to 22.000 passengers, while passenger traffic was up to 29,1% to about 140,000.

 

Liquid bulk grew by 6% during jenuary-march to 239,219 tonnes, while Liquid bulk handled declined 3.9% to 239.219 tonnes.

 

“Assuming everything looks good, box volumes will surpass the previous record set in 2015 when we moved 780,000 teus. Our encouraging start to the year gives us confidence in meeting full year market expectations”, said Livorno Port Authority Ceo Giuliano Gallanti.
